Win10, Server 2016 KMS servers start rejecting Win7 client activation. “The recommendation at this point is to leave your existing KMS system alone. Whether it is running on Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2012 R2, continue to service the machine via security and quality updates.
We are busy building a new environment. Most of our servers are Windows server 2016. And so is our KMS server.
To run some old applications, we need to activate a few Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems (Via Citrix PVS).
When I add the Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS key to the Windows Server 2016 KMS server I get this error message;
![Windows 2016 kms server setup Windows 2016 kms server setup](https://msfreaks.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/00a-windows-server-2016-eval-to-licensed1.png?w=605)
Error: 0xC004F050 The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is invalid.
We successfully added Windows Server 2016 KMS keys to the KMS server
Questions;
- Is it possible to activate Windows Server 2008 via a 2016 KMS server
- Why is our product key failing?

A Windows Server KMS key allow to to activate any older version of Windows Server.
So, since you added Windows Server 2016 KMS keys to the KMS server, you have nothing special to do, your Windows Server 2008 should active just fine, provide you reached the activation threshold (5 servers IIRC).
Note : this is not true for Office.

My licensing team let me know we now have a 'Windows Srv 2016 DataCtr/Std KMS' key in our MS Volume License center.
I can't find any data on what the 2016 key can authenticate (IE, we still have a few 2003 servers that still need a valid KMS Host to auth against), and when I try installing the KMS Host key on a 2012r2 server it tells me it isn't a valid key.
I noticed Microsoft updated their GVLK listing with Windows 2016 stuff. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867(v=ws.11).aspx
However I can't find if there is a patch for a 2012r2 server to run a 2016 host key, or what.
Anyone have information from Microsoft on the requirements to install the 2016 Host Key, and/or what OS's can authenticate against it?
PS - No, I'm not talking about Office 2016. Server 2016.
Thanks!
